I used to think I just had a bad nose for it.

The house was clean.I'd hoovered, wiped the surfaces down, opened the windows for a bit in the morning. By every visible measure, it was spotless. And yet there was always something sitting underneath it all, last night's dinner still hanging around the kitchen, a faint mustiness in the hallway, the bathroom that never quite smelled "finished" even straight after cleaning it.

I'd spray something before anyone came round. Crack a window and hope twenty minutes would sort it. It usually did, for about an hour. Then it was back.

The bit that made me stop and think

I honestly assumed this was just what living in a house was like. You cook, people come and go, the dog has a nap on the good sofa, and the smell of all of it settles in somewhere you can't quite locate. The feeling I was actually trying to get back

You know that feeling when you walk into somewhere like a nice hotel lobby or a spa, and the fragrance is just there, consistent, every single time? It's not a burst of a smell you notice for ten seconds and then stop clocking. It's just quietly doing its job in the background, so the space always feels the same: fresh, cared for, welcoming.

That's what I wanted at home. Not another can of spray to reach for the second the doorbell rings, something that worked constantly, so I didn't have to think about it, or notice the exact moment it stopped.

What actually changed it

I ended up trying Valentte, a small UK company that handcrafts its candles and reed diffusers in Cheshire using natural oils. I wasn't expecting much, but within the first evening the fragrance was noticeably carrying further into the room than anything I'd tried before, and it kept doing that, burn after burn, rather than fading out after a few days like the ones I'd bought previously.

Then I went and read through the reviews, and realised I wasn't the only one dealing with this.
